Nyheim Hines, a running back, is set to make his comeback to football after a two-year absence from the NFL due to an injury sustained in a Jet Ski accident.

According to a report from ESPN, Hines, 28, has agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Hines suffered an ACL tear in July 2023 when he was involved in a Jet Ski accident. At the time of the injury, he was part of the Buffalo Bills and was their top kick and punt returner on the depth chart.

The former N.C. State standout signed with the Cleveland Browns in the 2024 offseason but was unable to play any games with the team due to the ACL injury.

Hines faces stiff competition for a spot on the roster. He will be competing with Hassan Haskins, Kimani Vidal, and Jaret Patterson for a backup running back role.

The top two running backs on the depth chart are already established ahead of Hines. The Chargers drafted Omarion Hampton in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft and also signed veteran running back Najee Harris.

Harris has rushed for over 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons but is expected to start training camp on the non-football injury list after sustaining an eye injury on July 4 in a fireworks accident.

Throughout his career, Hines has been a versatile running back. In 81 games, he has accumulated 1,202 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns and an average of 3.9 yards per carry.

Hines has also recorded 240 receptions for 1,778 yards and eight receiving touchdowns, averaging 7.4 yards per catch.

On special teams, Hines has scored two punt return touchdowns and two kickoff return touchdowns in his career.
