Apple plans to enter foldable phone market in 2026: Cool tech with serious drawbacks

NEWYou now have the option to listen to news articles!

Imagine having a foldable phone. Picture yourself walking into a coffee shop, unfolding your phone like a superhero, and making a call.

Recently, Samsung released the seventh-generation Galaxy Z Fold and Flip, Google introduced the Pixel Fold, and Motorola brought back a modern version of the Razr. While these new devices sound exciting, there are some drawbacks to consider.

How Foldable Phones Work

Foldable phones utilize ultrathin flexible glass over OLED displays, along with a mechanical hinge system. This technology allows the phone to bend physically while still displaying a full-resolution screen.

The hinges are designed to withstand hundreds of thousands of folds, which translates to up to a decade of daily opening and closing.

Big Screens, Big Prices

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 opens like a book, offering a tablet-sized 7.6-inch screen inside and a 6.2-inch screen outside.

The Flip 7 folds vertically, resembling a compact mirror with a 6.7-inch screen when open and a 3.4-inch mini display on the outside.

Google’s Pixel Fold features a wider front screen and a slightly smaller inside display.

Considerations

While foldable phones are visually appealing, they come with a hefty price tag. The Fold 7 starts at $1,899, the Pixel Fold at $1,799, and the Flip 7 and Motorola’s Razr+ at around $999. Additionally, these phones are bulkier, more fragile, and harder to protect compared to traditional devices.

Despite their allure, foldable phones have limitations such as shorter battery life, increased susceptibility to damage, and software that is still in the experimental stage.

Future of Foldable Phones

Rumors suggest that Apple is working on foldable iPhones set for release in 2026. Apple’s models are said to fold like a book and a flip phone, with a focus on seamless technology.

Considering the current drawbacks of foldable phones, it may be wise to wait for more refined and affordable options in the future.
