Heart disease, especially structural heart disease (SHD), can often sneak up without any warning signs. This type of heart disease can be deadly, with no chest pain or shortness of breath until it’s too late.
The introduction of a new artificial intelligence tool called EchoNext is changing the game. By analyzing a standard ECG, EchoNext can identify hidden heart issues that even trained cardiologists might miss. This means that a routine five-minute heart test could potentially provide life-saving information if AI technology is utilized.

Understanding Structural Heart Disease and Its Dangers
Structural heart disease (SHD) involves defects in the heart’s walls, valves, or chambers. Some defects are present at birth, while others develop slowly over time. These issues often go unnoticed until a major event like a heart attack or stroke occurs. SHD is often referred to as “hidden” heart disease because even standard ECG tests may not detect it. This is where EchoNext comes into play.
WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?
EchoNext: The Innovative AI Tool
EchoNext was developed by researchers at Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian. The tool was trained on a vast dataset of ECG and echocardiogram pairs from thousands of patients. Its primary function is to identify when further examination, specifically an echocardiogram, is necessary based on the ECG results.
“EchoNext essentially uses the less expensive test to determine who needs the more costly one,” explained Dr. Pierre Elias, the study’s lead researcher.
The results of EchoNext’s performance were remarkable.

Outperforming Human Cardiologists
In trials, EchoNext correctly identified 77% of structural heart disease cases from ECGs, surpassing cardiologists who only detected 64%. Moreover, when tested on nearly 85,000 individuals, EchoNext identified over 7,500 people at high risk for undiagnosed SHD. Subsequent echocardiograms confirmed that 73% of these individuals were indeed diagnosed with SHD within a year, a significantly higher rate than the average. These groundbreaking findings were published in Nature, a reputable scientific journal.

Importance of Early Detection
Many individuals unknowingly live with SHD, as symptoms may not be evident. Regular heart screenings are often skipped because everything feels normal. Even when ECG tests are conducted, subtle signs of heart issues can go unnoticed. EchoNext, however, has the capability to detect these warning signs that might be missed by human observation. This technology does not replace doctors but provides them with a powerful tool to identify issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Implications for Individuals
Taking your heart health seriously does not require waiting for symptoms to appear. If you have undergone an ECG or are scheduled to do so, AI technology can help in identifying hidden risks that may be overlooked by your doctor. Tools like EchoNext facilitate the early detection of heart problems, even in the absence of noticeable symptoms.
This proactive approach reduces the chances of unexpected surprises, missed diagnoses, and provides a better opportunity for timely treatment. By incorporating AI tools to review heart tests, individuals can benefit from advanced detection methods. While EchoNext is currently used in research environments, similar tools are rapidly advancing towards broader implementation in medical facilities.

Kurt’s Insights
The integration of AI in medicine is no longer a futuristic concept but a present reality. EchoNext demonstrates how machine learning can significantly enhance the detection of silent threats like SHD. If a combination of ECG and AI can potentially save numerous lives, why delay its adoption?
