The New York Yankees are strengthening their roster in preparation for the postseason.

The team has acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, as announced by both teams on Friday.

McMahon, 30, will address the third base position that has been a weakness for the Yankees throughout the season. Their third basemen have collectively posted a .645 OPS this season, ranking among the worst in the league.

Although McMahon has a .217 batting average with 16 home runs this season, his .717 OPS represents an improvement over the current third base options for the Yankees.

Despite his overall offensive performance, McMahon has shown better hitting form recently, with a .246 average and 14 home runs since May 1.

Additionally, McMahon is known for his strong defensive skills at third base, which will enhance the Yankees’ infield defense.

McMahon has spent his entire career of nine seasons with the Rockies.

Rockies’ senior vice president and general manager Bill Schmidt expressed gratitude for McMahon’s contributions to the team and community, as McMahon moves on to the Yankees.

Herring, 22, has shown promise with a 7-3 record and a 1.71 ERA in 16 starts across Single-A Tampa and High-A Hudson Valley.

Grosz, 22, has showcased potential with a 4-8 record and a 4.14 ERA in 16 appearances (15 starts) with High-A Hudson Valley.

The Yankees, currently with a 56-46 record, are hopeful that McMahon’s addition will bolster their roster as they aim for a postseason berth.

On the other hand, the struggling Rockies, with a 26-76 record, may continue to make trades ahead of the July 31 deadline as they focus on building for the future.
