The Commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, commended NYPD Officer Didarul Islam in a message to employees who were present at the site where a gunman killed four people and injured others in a shooting incident.

Goodell, in a memo obtained by Fox News Digital, mentioned that one NFL employee was “seriously injured” but is now in stable condition. He specifically thanked Islam for his heroic act of sacrificing his life to save others.

“We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded swiftly and decisively to this threat, and to Officer Islam, who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others,” read the memo.

The 36-year-old officer had been serving on the force for four years before being tragically shot on Monday evening. He was a devoted husband and father to two young boys, with his wife expecting their third child, as stated by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Islam, originally from Bangladesh and assigned to the NYPD’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx, was one of two uniformed officers present at the Park Avenue high-rise during the shooting.

Both officers were part of the paid detail program at the high-rise, which allows companies to hire uniformed officers for additional security, Tisch explained.

The NYPD praised Islam, stating that he “embodied the finest qualities of our department.”

“He was protecting New Yorkers from harm when his life was tragically cut short today,” the NYPD added. “We come together in prayer during this time of immense grief. His legacy will forever be honored.”

The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, announced that flags on all governmental buildings and stationary flag staffs will be lowered to half-staff in honor of Islam.
