Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican from New York, is advising New Yorkers to remain vigilant about their surroundings following a tragic mass shooting in the heart of Manhattan on Monday.

The only Republican representing New York City in the House of Representatives emphasized that there is still limited information available about the incident, which she described as “isolated.”

She highlighted that this event serves as another example of the risks present in today’s world.

“It did not appear to be a random attack. It seemed like he had a specific motive for targeting that particular building. However, everyone needs to stay alert. In a post-9/11 world, it is crucial for us to remain vigilant, stay observant, and report anything that seems suspicious,” Malliotakis stated.

She described the situation as “alarming,” noting that the man was captured on camera entering the Park Avenue building armed with an assault rifle before opening fire.

“My heart goes out to the wife and children of this police officer, as well as all the families who lost loved ones yesterday. People leave their homes, go to work, follow their normal routines, and then never return,” Malliotakis expressed.

“This is not only shocking and heartbreaking but also serves as a reminder of how fragile life is. We must stay vigilant as a community and as a country. Anything can happen at any moment.”

Malliotakis urged fellow officials not to politicize the situation and anticipated receiving briefings from the mayor’s office and the New York Police Department (NYPD).

When asked about the information she hoped to receive, she mentioned, “It is likely that this individual was not on the city’s watchlist because he came from Nevada. The question remains whether he was known to Nevada law enforcement or the federal government due to any past criminal activities or mental health issues.”

“What was his motive? Did he have any history that could have raised concerns?” she inquired.

A gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, is believed to have traveled from the western U.S. to New York City, where he carried out the shooting that resulted in the deaths of three individuals inside a corporate office building in Midtown Manhattan before taking his own life.

Police indicated that Tamura had an address in Las Vegas and was known to have a “documented mental health history,” according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Mayor Eric Adams informed Fox 5 New York that it appeared Tamura was targeting the NFL, whose headquarters is situated within the building, along with other organizations.

Multiple fatalities occurred, including a police officer and Tamura himself, and several others sustained injuries.

Adams stated that the man’s suicide note referenced his struggles with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and blamed the NFL, despite never having played for the professional league.

“We are still examining the suicide note to determine the exact motive,” Adams stated.
