GLP-1 medications have benefits that go beyond just managing diabetes and promoting weight loss.

GLP-1s, also known as GLP-1 agonists, are drugs that mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 which helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Experts suggest that these medications, such as semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound), may also aid in managing rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

RA is a chronic autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, leading to joint inflammation, pain, and stiffness, as described by Mayo Clinic.

Studies have shown a connection between being overweight or obese and the risk of developing RA.

In fact, a study published in the journal Nature in 2020 found that higher BMI and waist circumference were associated with a higher prevalence of the condition.

Sue Decotiis, M.D., a medical weight-loss specialist in New York City, has observed significant relief in patients with inflammatory arthritis after taking GLP-1s.

While more research is needed to fully understand these additional benefits of GLP-1 medications, Decotiis explained that fat cells produce substances like cytokines and adipokines that can contribute to inflammation and affect immune system function.

Decotiis emphasized the importance of being monitored by a knowledgeable physician when considering using GLP-1s, especially in terms of body composition.

She also noted various other positive effects of GLP-1 medications, including potential reductions in alcohol consumption and dependence on certain medications for conditions like ADD and anxiety.

Furthermore, these drugs have been associated with a decreased risk of migraines, Alzheimer’s disease, and some types of cancer.

It is crucial to consult a healthcare professional before starting GLP-1 therapy, as online platforms may not provide the necessary in-person care and monitoring.
