Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman acknowledged that his party had misjudged President Donald Trump’s tariffs, stating that the U.S. trade war is currently progressing positively.
When questioned by Fox News Digital about the Trump administration’s success in the trade war, Fetterman replied, “Absolutely.”
“I’m a big fan of Bill Maher, and he recognized that he thought the tariffs would harm the economy, but then admitted that it didn’t,” Fetterman stated.
“So, from my perspective, it appears that the situation with the E.U. is going well, and we will have to wait and see how it unfolds with China,” he added.
This development comes as President Trump is raising tariffs on Canada from 25% to 35% starting on Friday due to the country’s failure to help limit the influx of fentanyl and other illegal drugs into the U.S.
Moreover, Trump signed an executive order to adjust the reciprocal tariff rates for certain countries to address the U.S.’s trade deficits and safeguard the nation’s national security and economy.
Earlier this year, Trump implemented a 10% tariff on all countries and raised tariffs for nations with which the U.S. has significant trade deficits. These tariffs took effect on April 9, leading to the negotiation of various trade deals with multiple countries.
The U.S. reached agreements with the European Union and Japan, resulting in substantial investments in American industries. However, some Democrats remain critical of Trump’s tariff strategy, warning of potential negative consequences in the future.
On the other hand, Republicans have expressed support for Trump’s tariff approach, emphasizing the benefits it brings to America. They hope to achieve zero percent reciprocal tariffs between the U.S. and its trading partners in the long run.
“Let the free enterprise system work. May the best product at the best price win. That, to me, would be the perfect situation,” said Senator John Kennedy, R-La.
