Reports indicate that star wide receiver Terry McLaurin of the Washington Commanders has requested a trade, and head coach Dan Quinn addressed the situation for the first time on Saturday.

McLaurin, 29, has been present at training camp but is not participating in practice as he waits for a contract extension. There seems to be a disagreement between him and the Commanders.

Quinn expressed his appreciation for McLaurin’s presence at training camp, even though he is not currently practicing.

“I’m really glad he’s here,” Quinn said before practice. “I love coaching him, but the business side, that’s kind of where it’s at. Somebody asked me, is it a distraction? It is not.”

McLaurin has one year left on the three-year, $68 million contract extension he signed in June 2022. He is seeking a new deal that would place him among the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL.

Last season, McLaurin had an outstanding performance, with 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns. In the playoffs, he continued to excel, catching 14 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns in three games.

Quinn mentioned that McLaurin’s trade request is a common occurrence in the NFL and that players are more aware of contract negotiations than before.

“We love Terry. I’m really glad he is here, and hopefully he is out practicing soon. And we also understand there’s the business side of these things that (general manager) Adam (Peters) and his side and Terry and his reps are working through,” Quinn said.

Without McLaurin, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end Zach Ertz are the top passing options for quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was the Offensive Rookie of the Year last season.

McLaurin has been a key player for the Commanders throughout his six-year career, making the Pro Bowl twice.
