Conor McGregor made a statement in March about his intention to run for President of Ireland – and now, he’s taking steps to formalize his candidacy.

The popular UFC fighter shared a petition on social media on Monday to garner support to ensure his name appears on the ballot.

“I, Conor McGregor, hereby announce my desire to run for the esteemed position of President of Ireland,” McGregor stated in the petition.

“The current constitutional framework poses a significant hurdle to democratic engagement. The current rules state that a candidate must receive nominations from either twenty Oireachtas members or four county councils to be eligible for the ballot. Although designed to ensure a level of political backing among candidates, it inadvertently limits the direct voice of the Irish electorate.

“Due to this, I am advocating for a change in the nomination process to enable my inclusion on the ballot. I believe that the people of Ireland, both at home and abroad, should have the unrestricted right to choose the candidates who compete in the presidential election. Therefore, I urge you to support me by signing this petition. Your assistance will be crucial in promoting a more inclusive and democratic electoral process, empowering the people of Ireland to shape their own destiny.”

McGregor initially announced his presidential aspirations shortly after meeting with President Donald Trump earlier this year.

The former champion has expressed opposition to a bill related to the EU Migration Pact.

“Ireland must fully implement the EU Migration Pact by June 12, 2026. Therefore, several pieces of legislation need to be passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas & then signed by the President… Who else will challenge the Government and resist this bill?… I will!” McGregor declared in March.

“It is the people of Ireland’s decision! Always! That is true democracy!… This is the future of Ireland with me as President. All Irish citizens should have a say and a choice in their future! God bless our people. Vote McGregor and let your voice be heard!”

In September, he hinted at a potential presidential bid in Ireland, positioning himself as the “only logical choice.”

McGregor has been out of action since sustaining a leg injury in a fight against Dustin Poirier in 2021. Although he was expected to return last year, a toe injury prevented his comeback. He has since expressed interest in returning to the octagon only in a stadium, but has also shown enthusiasm for the UFC event at the White House next year.
