An English man on vacation with his family in Florida was taken into custody over the weekend after allegedly attempting to drown his daughter-in-law during an argument regarding grandchildren.

Mark Raymond Gibbon, 62, from Beaconsfield, England, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery, as reported by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Gibbon and his 33-year-old daughter-in-law were engaged in a dispute in a swimming pool at a vacation home when he purportedly tried to drown her.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at a residence within the Solterra Resort in Davenport, Florida. Law enforcement officers responded to the scene following reports from neighbors of a disturbance in a backyard swimming pool, the sheriff’s office stated.

The daughter-in-law informed investigators that Gibbon pushed and held her head underwater multiple times during the argument, and her 9-year-old daughter intervened by jumping into the pool to prevent the drowning attempt.

Gibbon ceased his efforts to drown the woman only after two sisters staying in a neighboring residence claimed to have contacted the sheriff’s office.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd emphasized that tourists are welcome in the county as long as they adhere to appropriate conduct.

“While it’s wonderful that Polk County attracts visitors from around the world, we expect vacationers to behave appropriately during their stay, just as we expect our local residents to do,” Judd remarked.
