Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, a prominent Democrat, revisited his recent remarks regarding the fairness of allowing biological males to compete in women’s and girls’ sports.
During an interview with NPR in July, Buttigieg acknowledged “serious fairness issues” surrounding the participation of trans athletes in female sports. He further discussed the topic in a Substack Live interview with Aaron Parnas, emphasizing the importance of listening to parents who have concerns about males competing in girls’ sports.
“To foster unity on this matter, we must listen to all perspectives, including parents with questions,” Buttigieg stated.

“People who are uncertain about the implications of this issue are bound to have questions about ensuring fairness, and it is crucial that we address these concerns together.”
The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, also expressed his belief that the topic is being exploited for political gain and reiterated his stance that decisions regarding trans athletes in women’s sports should not be made by politicians.
“I see this issue being used as a tool for division and harm. It is particularly damaging for trans individuals and those with transgender family members who are subjected to being politicized,” he remarked.
Buttigieg’s initial comments on NPR in July sparked debates and criticisms from some liberals and pro-trans activists, highlighting the ongoing division within the Democratic Party on this issue.
Buttigieg is among several prominent Democrats and media personalities who have opposed the idea of allowing males to compete in female sports, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., and HBO host Bill Maher.
An article by The New York Times claimed that President Biden did not support trans athletes participating in women’s and girls’ sports.
A New York Times/Ipsos survey revealed that the majority of Americans, including a significant number of Democrats, do not believe transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in women’s sports.
According to the survey, 79% of respondents opposed biological males who identify as women participating in women’s sports.
Among Democrats or Democrat-leaning individuals, 67% agreed that transgender athletes should not compete with women.
Further data suggests that this issue played a role in the outcome of the 2024 election.
A national exit poll conducted by the Concerned Women for America (CWA) legislative action committee indicated that 70% of moderate voters considered the issue of transgender individuals in sports and bathrooms to be important.
Additionally, 6% of respondents viewed it as the most critical issue, while 44% deemed it “very important.”
