In a move to reduce crime in the nation’s capital, President Donald Trump is increasing federal enforcement in Washington, D.C., by deploying additional federal law enforcement agents this week.

Supported by a March executive order, the White House, federal agencies, and local officials will collaborate to combat crime in D.C.

Residents of Washington, D.C., can anticipate a rise in federal enforcement starting as soon as Friday, according to officials.

“Washington, D.C., is a wonderful city, but it has unfortunately been plagued by crime for too long,” stated White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement. “President Trump is dedicated to enhancing the safety and beauty of our nation’s capital for its residents, lawmakers, and visitors.”

Trump recently threatened to federalize Washington, D.C., urging for local minors and gang members over the age of 14 to be prosecuted as adults after a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employee was reportedly assaulted by two juveniles in the city.

A White House official mentioned that revitalizing the capital has been a key focus for the president, who established the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force through an executive order.

Federal officials will oversee D.C.’s sanctuary city status to ensure compliance with immigration laws and support the accreditation of the district’s forensic crime laboratory to assist with local investigations.

One of the main changes will be an increased federal law enforcement presence in key locations in the city, such as the National Mall, Lafayette Park, Union Station, Rock Creek Park, and major parkways.

The task force has already started utilizing federal enforcement and the National Park Services to enhance enforcement, apprehend illegal immigrants, and clear homeless encampments from parks and public spaces.

Operational details were still being finalized as of Thursday afternoon.
