The ordinance was approved by the Township Council after instances of public disturbances involving children at events like last year’s Gloucester Township Day and Drone Show. During one of these events, a large fight involving teenagers occurred, leading to multiple arrests, including nine teenagers. Additionally, three police officers were injured during the altercation.
This year’s event was postponed due to concerns over similar behavior being planned, as indicated by social media posts. The ordinance covers 28 different offenses, ranging from serious crimes to minor violations like loitering, violating curfew, or chronic truancy.
If a child is repeatedly found guilty in juvenile court, their caregiver could face up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,000, the police department stated. Guardians will receive a warning before being issued a citation, as explained by Gloucester Township Police Chief David Harkins.
Harkins mentioned that the ordinance was adapted from regulations in other towns and that Gloucester Township is likely one of the first larger towns to implement it. Fox News Digital has contacted the Gloucester Township Police Department for additional comments.
