Actor Tom Hanks is honoring the memory of astronaut Jim Lovell, whom he depicted in the movie “Apollo 13.”
In a heartfelt tribute shared on Instagram, Hanks described Lovell as a true visionary. “There are individuals who take risks, who dream, and who guide others to places we wouldn’t venture to alone,” the actor expressed. “Jim Lovell, who spent more time in space than any other person from Earth, embodied these qualities.”
The former commander of the Apollo 13 mission passed away on Thursday in Lake Forest, Illinois at the age of 97.
Hanks continued, “His numerous journeys around Earth and towards the moon were not for personal gain or fame, but rather to embrace the challenges that define our existence – and who better than Jim Lovell to undertake such voyages.”
Reflecting on Lovell’s passing, Hanks added, “On this night of a full moon, he embarks on his next journey – to the heavens, to the cosmos, to the stars. Godspeed on your next adventure, Jim Lovell.”
Lovell was part of a three-person crew in 1970 that safely returned to Earth after facing an in-space emergency when a crucial oxygen tank exploded during the Apollo 13 mission, which was supposed to be the third lunar mission.
Film director Ron Howard, who worked on “Apollo 13,” also paid tribute to Lovell, whose story was immortalized in the beloved movie.
In a post on social media, Howard reflected on Lovell’s remarkable career and the impact he had on both the world and the film. “Having known Jim has been a great privilege. His blend of intelligence, bravery, and sense of duty made him one of the most extraordinary individuals I’ve ever met.”
Howard highlighted the significant influence Lovell had during the production of “Apollo 13.” “His support for our filmmaking efforts inspired authenticity and enhanced our creative process in numerous ways.”
He concluded, “Thank you, sir, for your service to our nation and humanity.”
Lovell’s family released a statement following his passing on Friday.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of our beloved father, USN Captain James A. ‘Jim’ Lovell, a Navy pilot and officer, astronaut, leader, and space explorer.”
“We are incredibly proud of his extraordinary life and career achievements, especially his legendary leadership in advancing human space exploration,” the family statement read. “But to us, he was Dad, Granddad, and the Head of our family. Above all, he was our Hero. We will miss his unwavering optimism, his sense of humor, and the way he instilled in each of us the belief that we could achieve the impossible. He was truly one of a kind.”
