Four individuals lost their lives when a gunman entered a New York City skyscraper towards the end of the workday on Monday.
The victims included an off-duty NYPD officer, a security guard, a Blackstone executive, and a Rudin employee at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
Authorities confirmed that a fifth victim was shot and is in critical but stable condition.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor of the building.
The building houses offices for various businesses including the Blackstone Group, the NFL, Rudin Management Company, and KPMG.
The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
According to reports, Tamura was a Las Vegas resident who previously worked as an overnight security guard at Horseshoe Las Vegas.
Mayor Eric Adams mentioned that NYPD teams are heading to Las Vegas to search Tamura’s home and determine how he acquired the AR-15-style rifle used in the shooting.
Investigators believe Tamura assembled the firearm using components purchased by an associate.
NYPD Officer Didarul Islam was among those killed in the attack. Islam, a 33-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh, had been with the NYPD for about three and a half years.
He was off-duty at the time and working as a security guard in the building. Islam leaves behind a pregnant wife expecting their third child.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described Islam as a hero who understood the risks associated with his job.
Blackstone mourned the loss of Wesley LePatner, a 43-year-old executive who had been with the company since 2014.
LePatner was highly respected within the firm and served as the Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and CEO of the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust.
She was described as brilliant, passionate, and deeply respected by all who knew her.
Another victim, Aland Etienne, was identified as a dedicated security officer by the SEIU.
The union emphasized the sacrifice that security officers make every day to ensure the safety of others.
One of the victims was an employee of Rudin Management Company, who was only five years out of college.
The company expressed deep sorrow over the tragic events and extended condolences to all affected by the incident.
Law enforcement detailed the sequence of events that unfolded during the shooting, starting with Tamura entering the building and opening fire on individuals in the lobby.
He then proceeded to different floors, causing more casualties before ultimately taking his own life.
Investigators revealed that Tamura had a history of mental health issues and expressed grievances towards the NFL in a suicide note.
The tragic incident led to a memorial service in honor of the victims held in Bryant Park.
The community came together to mourn the loss of lives and show support for the families affected by the violence.
Overall, the city of New York stands united against such acts of hatred and violence.
