Army vet Sam Brown to lead national veterans’ cemeteries

The Senate has approved another one of President Donald Trump’s nominees, this time for a key role overseeing veterans’ cemeteries and burials.

Sam Brown, an Army veteran and former Nevada GOP Senate candidate, was confirmed as Trump’s Veteran’s Affairs undersecretary for memorial affairs in a mostly partisan 54-44 vote. Nevada’s Democratic Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jackie Rosen broke ranks to support Brown’s confirmation.

As the undersecretary for memorial affairs, Brown will be responsible for the National Cemetery Administration, which manages over 150 national cemeteries where approximately 4 million veterans are laid to rest. The National Cemetery Administration also facilitates burials for over 100,000 military veterans and eligible family members annually.

Trump nominated Brown in January, praising him as an “American hero” for his service in the army. Brown, who was injured by an explosive device in Afghanistan, has since worked to help veterans access necessary medications.

Brown’s confirmation was one of three made by the Senate that day. Senate Republicans are working to overcome Democratic opposition to Trump’s nominees, including those for various agencies and judgeships.

Sen. Jerry Moran, chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, expressed disappointment over the delay in confirming Brown, emphasizing the importance of honoring veterans with dignity regardless of political affiliations.
