Biden targets Trump in National Bar Association gala address

Former President Joe Biden criticized President Donald Trump while addressing the National Bar Association’s 100th annual gala in Chicago. Biden claimed that Trump’s administration is engaged in an “existential” fight with minority communities. Biden expressed concern about the administration erasing the progress made during his term and undermining principles of fairness and justice.

Biden highlighted the importance of resisting the Trump administration and emphasized the significance of judges, courts, and the Constitution. He also took aim at Congress and the Supreme Court for enabling actions that he deemed detrimental to the nation.

During his speech, Biden positioned himself as a long-time ally of the civil rights movement and highlighted the diverse appointments made by his administration. He urged the audience to fight for the future and defend democracy against the threats he perceived from the current administration.

The former president’s address, which was delivered at the National Bar Association event, was well-received by attendees. The event featured prominent Black lawyers and legal professionals, and Biden’s presence was described as historic and meaningful by the National Bar Association president.

Biden’s speech comes at a time when his son, Hunter Biden, has been under public scrutiny for various issues, including a voluntary disbarment related to drug use and gun law violations. Despite this backdrop, Biden’s remarks focused on the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting democracy.

Overall, Biden’s speech at the National Bar Association gala underscored his commitment to justice, equality, and the values he believes are essential for the future of the nation.

In a recent development, Hunter Biden agreed to have his license to practice law in Washington, D.C., stripped, according to court records. This decision came after he filed a sealed affidavit in April consenting to his disbarment, thereby avoiding a court hearing on the matter. The suspension of his license was signed by District of Columbia Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby in June 2024.

It was revealed that Hunter Biden had sworn on a federal form, during the registration of a weapon, that he was not actively using controlled substances. This declaration ultimately led to a criminal case in Wilmington, resulting in his disbarment.

Furthermore, the recent testimony of longtime Biden aide Michael Donilon to the House Oversight Committee shed light on the potential financial incentives he could have received if the former president had won his 2024 re-election bid. Donilon emphasized that while every President ages during their time in office, President Biden continued to grow stronger and wiser as a leader, overcoming significant challenges along the way.

The National Bar Association, founded in Iowa at a time when Black attorneys were excluded from joining the American Bar Association, now advocates for civil rights, diversity in the legal profession, and equitable access to the law. With approximately 66,000 members, the organization stated that Biden’s appearance highlights his commitment to strengthening the rule of law, defending voting rights, and supporting historically marginalized communities.
