Billy Joel surprised a New York City pedicab driver when he stopped on the street.
The driver, with two female passengers, was playing Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” Joel noticed, recorded a video, and stopped to greet them.
The driver, unaware it was Joel, initially said: “Next time.”

Upon realizing it was Joel, the driver exclaimed: “Oh, Nice. You see, we are playing you, man.”
The driver asked for a photo as Joel showed himself inside the vehicle.
“We’re in a New York State of Mind…always,” Joel captioned the post.
Another video of the encounter, shared by a fan on social media, showed the pedicab driver taking a photo of his passengers while Joel remained in his vehicle.

In May, Joel disclosed that he had been diagnosed with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), which can impact vision, hearing, and balance.
“I understand that many people are concerned about my health, but I want to reassure everyone that I am fine,” Joel recently told People magazine. “This condition is unfamiliar to many, including me, despite my efforts to research it. I am managing it and working towards recovery.”

Joel’s life and career are highlighted in the upcoming HBO documentary, “Billy Joel: And So It Goes.” The “Piano Man” singer explained why he hesitated to share his personal story.
“I have avoided this kind of thing for a long time,” he told People magazine. “I am tired of talking about myself. Revisiting some of the foolish things I did is painful. But I provided some thematic direction. I said, ‘Just tell the truth.’”
The 76-year-old artist finds discussing himself to be “almost embarrassing.”
“My objective was to get it done,” Joel said about his involvement in the documentary. “During interviews, people often ask personal questions, and it can make you self-conscious after a while. It is almost embarrassing. When discussing your personal life apart from your work… there is a sense of caution involved.”
