The 2020 American League Cy Young recipient is making a move.

The Toronto Blue Jays have traded for Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for pitching prospect Khal Stephen, as announced by both teams on Thursday.

Bieber, at 30 years old, has not started any games this season due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery that he underwent last year.

During the recent offseason, Bieber signed a one-year contract with the Guardians, reportedly valued at up to $10 million with a $16 million player option for 2026.

The two-time All-Star only appeared in two games last season before his surgery. Following his first rehab start, Bieber had to pause due to elbow soreness.

Since then, he has made four rehab starts in July across various leagues, showing positive progress.

Bieber’s entire seven-year career was spent with the Guardians.

The Blue Jays currently have a strong starting pitching lineup, but adding Bieber could provide them with another top pitcher if he can return to his Cy Young level of performance. The Blue Jays lead the American League East with a record of 64-46, four games ahead of the New York Yankees.

Stephen, a 22-year-old second-round pick from Mississippi State in the 2024 MLB Draft, has excelled across three minor league levels this season with a 9-1 record and a 2.06 ERA in 17 starts and 91.2 innings.

The Guardians, with a record of 54-54, are nine games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. Rumors suggest they may trade other key players before the deadline.
