An armed bystander was captured on video bravely stopping a knife-wielding man who allegedly stabbed 11 individuals at a Walmart in Michigan on Saturday. The man, known as Derrick Perry, was seen in the footage aiming a firearm at the suspect in the store’s parking lot in Traverse City as he and other bystanders urged the suspect to “drop the knife.” Perry, a Marine veteran, along with other bystanders, managed to end the suspect’s attack without firing a shot and detained him until authorities arrived, without causing any harm. Sheriff Michael Shea commended their actions during a media briefing on Sunday.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Bradford James Gille, acted alone when he entered the store armed with a folding knife. Gille faces terrorism charges and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. The 11 victims, ranging from 29 to 84 years old, were all expected to recover, according to Munson Healthcare officials. The motive behind the stabbing attack remains unknown.
Perry’s courageous actions were recognized by the Overheard in Traverse City Facebook group, with many praising him as a hero. Perry’s daughter and daughter-in-law also expressed their pride and admiration for his life-saving efforts. The National Association for Gun Rights hailed Perry as a “good guy with a gun” whose bravery deserves acknowledgment.
