Electric vehicles are often recognized for their innovation, but they are not usually associated with affordability. However, Chinese automaker BYD is changing that narrative.
At the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, BYD introduced the Atto 1, which is grabbing attention for all the right reasons. Priced at around $12,000, this fully electric hatchback offers modern features, urban-ready performance, and a price point that could potentially make EVs more accessible to the general public.

Atto 1’s features and affordable EV performance
Despite falling into the budget category, the Atto 1 offers solid specs for city driving. With 55 kilowatts (approximately 75 horsepower) and 100 pound-feet of torque, a top speed of 80 miles per hour, and acceleration from zero to 30 miles per hour in under five seconds, it meets the daily driving needs effectively.
The standard version is equipped with a 30.08-kilowatt-hour Blade battery, providing a range of up to 186 miles under the NEDC testing cycle. For those seeking more distance, the long-range model includes a 38.88-kilowatt-hour battery, extending the range to about 236 miles, all while remaining affordable at approximately $14,500.
Charging the Atto 1 is simple, supporting AC charging at speeds up to 6.6 kilowatts and DC fast charging at 30 or 40 kilowatts, depending on the model. Additionally, each version features a vehicle-to-load system, enabling the powering of small devices using the car’s battery if necessary.

Inside the Atto 1: Compact electric car with smart comfort
Despite its affordability, the Atto 1 provides more than just the basics. It comes with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth phone-as-key functionality, automatic LED headlights, keyless entry and start, NFC digital key compatibility, single-zone air conditioning, and four built-in speakers.

Opting for the long-range version adds additional features for smoother daily driving, such as a powered driver’s seat, wireless phone charging, and an adjustable steering wheel. Even small conveniences like a one-touch power window with pinch protection enhance the overall experience, making it feel more like a premium vehicle.
Measuring just under 156 inches in length and about 68 inches in width, the Atto 1 is slightly larger than the Mitsubishi Mirage but smaller than a Toyota Yaris. Unlike these gas-powered models, the Atto 1 is fully electric and designed with clean transportation in mind.

Why BYD’s Atto 1 EV launch is perfectly timed for global buyers
The release of the Atto 1 coincides with major automakers intensifying their EV efforts in Asia. Toyota, commanding about 30 percent of the Indonesian car market, has announced plans to start producing electric vehicles in the country by the end of 2025. BYD’s decision to unveil an affordable EV at this time represents a different approach, offering a practical, drivable solution without making buyers wait years or spend exorbitant amounts of money.
WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?
For many people worldwide, owning a private vehicle symbolizes independence. While many individuals wish to transition away from internal combustion engines, cost remains a significant obstacle. The Atto 1 has the potential to have a global impact by providing a feasible way for individuals to go electric without straining their budgets or compromising on comfort.

What this means for you
If a vehicle like the Atto 1 enters the U.S. market, it could revolutionize the driving experience for everyday individuals. First-time buyers, students, and urban residents seeking a compact, eco-friendly, and connected vehicle may finally have an option that suits both their lifestyle and budget. While the Atto 1 may not offer self-driving capabilities or reach speeds of 200 miles per hour, it is designed to meet real-world needs with style and dependability.

Kurt’s key takeaways
Electric vehicles will only truly make a difference if they are accessible. This goes beyond just fancy features or long ranges; it involves creating EVs that are affordable and practical for everyday use. The Atto 1 from BYD may not target the luxury market, but it addresses a more crucial objective by making electric vehicles attainable for a broader audience in various locations, starting now.
