Coast Guard conducts alcohol test on tugboat captain post fatal collision

The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed that the captain of the tugboat involved in Monday’s tragic collision, which resulted in the deaths of two young girls attending a sailing camp, underwent alcohol testing as part of the ongoing investigation.

One of the victims, 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich, has been identified as the granddaughter of award-winning Argentinian TV producer Cris Morena. The Argentine Consulate in Miami verified her identity. Yankelevich comes from a family of producers and actors, with her grandfather and father being producers, and her mother an actor.

Yankelevich and another victim, a 13-year-old girl whose identity is yet to be confirmed, passed away after being transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital on Monday. Two other girls were in critical condition, while three others were rescued. Captain Frank Florio of Coast Guard Sector Miami mentioned that the girls were wearing life vests during the collision.

Florio assured that the investigation will look into the licensing of the tug and barge’s crew. The Miami Yacht Club, where the girls set sail from, will also be investigated as part of the ongoing probe.

The Miami Yacht Club stated that they are cooperating with law enforcement and expressed their condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. They have closed their facilities temporarily to allow for response efforts.
