Heading into the 2025 season, the Dallas Cowboys are facing a major storyline related to securing one of their best defensive players in recent memory.

Micah Parsons is entering the final year of his rookie contract with an impressive record of 256 tackles, 63 tackles for a loss, and 52.5 sacks in 63 career games. Since joining the NFL in 2021, he has established himself as one of the top edge rushers in the league.

With such an impressive performance, the question arises – why shouldn’t he be rewarded with a new contract?

Cowboys EVP and CEO Stephen Jones shared his perspective on the situation amidst fan chants urging his father, Jerry Jones, to secure Parsons’ future with the team.

“It doesn’t change anything,” Stephen Jones commented on the fan chants, as reported by The Athletic. “We are eager to compensate Micah as well. However, he also needs to express his desire for a new deal.”

During the offseason, top defensive players like Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt received lucrative contracts, indicating that Parsons is likely next in line for a significant payday. The team also recently extended deals with tight end Jake Ferguson and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa.

Parsons has been vocal about his contract situation this offseason, expressing in June that delays in negotiations could end up costing the team more. He pointed out other teams’ proactive approach in securing their star defensive players and expressed a desire for a similar commitment from the Cowboys.

“If they don’t want me here, they don’t want me here,” Parsons stated, as reported by The New York Post. “I’ll focus on my performance as long as I’m under contract. But if this is the end, then so be it.”

“I just don’t understand,” Parsons added, reflecting on his current predicament.

Despite ongoing contract negotiations, Parsons has been present at the Cowboys’ training camp. However, he has been limited in full practice participation due to back tightness.
