Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas is showing support for the Texas state lawmakers who left the state to delay a vote on new congressional maps that would benefit Republicans in 2026.
Crockett criticized the Republican effort and its supporters, including former President Donald Trump, whom she referred to as a “ridiculous tyrant” in a message to her followers on Instagram.
“My colleagues from the state house have decided to leave and show their disapproval. I am thrilled and grateful because this is the kind of resistance that the American people should witness,” Crockett stated.
“We are aware that this ridiculous tyrant is trying to undermine our democracy. But there are defenders of democracy who are committed to standing up for the people. They know the task at hand.”
Representative Crockett gained national attention when she was part of a group of Texas statehouse Democrats who left the state to stall a vote on a GOP-backed elections bill in 2021.
Democratic state lawmakers are accusing Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Republican lawmakers of prioritizing Trump’s interests over helping those affected by the recent deadly floods in Texas.
“Over 130 Texans lost their lives in the July 4th floods. Republicans responded with no flood relief bills — and instead focused on redistricting to support Trump’s hold on power. That’s not governance, that’s exploitation. We broke quorum because Texans deserve better,” stated State Representative John Bucy III.
Abbott, on the other hand, accused Democrats of impeding flood relief efforts by not being present in the statehouse – and suggested they should be removed from their elected positions.
“Our fellow Texans are being neglected and not receiving the flood relief they need because these Democrats have abandoned their responsibilities,” Abbott mentioned in an interview.
Representative Crockett expressed her excitement over the Democrats fleeing to Chicago and New York City.
“They understand their responsibilities. They know who they swore an oath to. They know they do not serve him. We do not serve him. He is not ours. He is not our constituent,” Crockett stated regarding Trump.
“Hopefully, this will inspire more Democrats to push back strongly because, unfortunately, he is trampling on our rights significantly.”
Crockett also referred to Trump as an “orangutan” and “Temu Hitler” in the video.
She mocked Trump and his Republican allies, stating, “To be a true MAGA supporter, you have to embrace a thug lifestyle. You have to engage in infidelity. You have to be impeached, or at least have impeachment charges brought against you.”
Republicans currently hold 25 of Texas’ 38 seats in the House of Representatives. Trump won 27 in the 2024 election, while Democratic Representatives Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez retained their seats.
According to the proposed new lines, Trump would have won in 30 districts by at least a 10% margin each, as reported by the Texas Tribune.
Crockett’s home in the Dallas area would be outside of her current district lines under the new proposal.
Abbott has given the state Democrats until 3 p.m. local time on Monday to reconvene.
