Reportedly, supporters of Andrew Cuomo are encouraging New Yorkers with second homes in the Hamptons to change their voter registrations to New York City. This is in order to vote against Democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming November election.

The strategy aims to target moderate Democrats in the affluent area, including business owners and restaurateurs, who have strong connections in NYC and a vested interest in local affairs, according to Steven M. Cohen, chairman of the pro-Cuomo political action committee Fix the City.

Cohen stated that he has engaged with numerous individuals, some of whom are prominent figures, who have confirmed their intentions to switch their voter registrations from the East End of Long Island to one of the five boroughs.

“I’ve been advocating for this approach since the primary,” Cohen explained. “Success in elections is not achieved by doing one thing right, but by executing numerous strategies effectively. While this may only translate to a few thousand votes, elections have been determined by even smaller margins.”

In contrast, during the 2024 elections, New York City Democrats with second homes in the Hamptons were encouraged to alter their voter registrations to vote against then-incumbent Rep. Nick LaLota, resulting in his re-election to a second term.

This time, Cohen highlighted the ease of changing voter registration for interested individuals with legitimate secondary residences in New York City. He addressed initial concerns about tax implications, stating that the only restriction from the state Board of Elections is against voting in multiple locations.

“There are no tax implications whatsoever – that’s a key message,” Cohen emphasized, underscoring that the strategy is part of a broader effort to engage New Yorkers with Hamptons residences in the political process of New York City.

However, Republican donor Andy Sabin disapproved of the movement, expressing concerns about potential audits and other legal implications.

Election lawyer Jerry Goldfeder outlined the process for interested individuals to change their address with the Board of Elections using a valid registration form.

One resident, Mitchell Agoos, expressed his intent to switch his voter registration in order to vote against Mamdani, whom he labeled as an “antisemite” and a “disaster.” Agoos, a supporter of Curtis Sliwa, has been voting in Suffolk County for decades.
