Delaware Republicans used a popular meme to criticize the state’s Democratic majority over offshore wind projects in the First State. The meme compared “Delaware Democrats” to a former CEO caught in a scandal, with wind power interests taking the place of the CEO’s HR executive.
The meme also suggested that several top Democrats received donations from US Wind, a Baltimore-based subsidiary of an Italian wind energy firm.
Lawmakers from both parties were contacted for comment, but none responded.
Recently, Delaware has been moving towards developing wind energy offshore. Most Republicans represent beachfront counties, while Democrats have a majority in more suburban areas.
The State Senate approved a resolution to overturn a local decision rejecting a wind energy permit application in Sussex County. The project aims to repurpose a coal-fired power plant as a wind substation.
US Wind received approvals to connect offshore wind power to the electrical grid in Delaware. The CEO stated that this was an important step forward in delivering clean energy to the region.
The Biden administration also approved a major offshore wind project off the coastlines of Maryland and Delaware.
Delaware Republicans have gained support for their opposition to offshore wind projects. Concerns have been raised about the reliability and cost of wind energy, as well as the impact on tourism.
