A Democratic councilman from Michigan, whose criminal record was expunged under a Democrat-supported law, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman.
Leon El-Alamin, a 44-year-old First Ward city councilman in Flint, was taken into custody on July 10 on charges of domestic violence and assault, according to court documents filed by the Mount Morris Township police.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton stated that the woman was allegedly attacked by El-Alamin because she was checking her emails.
Leyton described the injuries sustained by the woman, which were consistent with being punched in the face, choked, and dragged by her hair. He also mentioned the discovery of a gun at the scene.
El-Alamin denied the accusations on his organization’s Facebook page, asserting his innocence and expressing confidence in the legal process.
El-Alamin, known for founding the M.A.D.E. Institute, a non-profit organization focused on Money, Attitude, Direction, and Education, has been involved in various community activities.
He was elected to the city council in November and has been seen with prominent Democratic figures like U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
El-Alamin’s troubled past, involving drug dealing and a prison sentence, was expunged in 2021 under the Clean Slate Act, which aimed to give ex-convicts a fresh start.
His bond was set at $7,500, and he recently appeared in court for a hearing.
Efforts to reach out to Whitmer’s office, El-Alamin, and Leyton for comments were unsuccessful.
