DOJ launches grand jury probe into NY AG Letitia James

The Department of Justice has convened a grand jury to investigate New York Attorney General Letitia James, signaling a escalation in President Donald Trump’s conflict with New York’s top prosecutor.

The investigation is taking place in Albany, New York, and is focused on potential deprivation of rights allegations, according to two reliable sources familiar with the probe. Although it is still in the early stages, James’s office has received subpoenas for documents this week, including information related to her civil fraud lawsuit against Trump.

Letitia James, a Democrat who assumed office as attorney general in 2018, has been a frequent target of Trump. She successfully brought civil charges against him for business fraud in 2022 and has played a significant role in challenging his administration’s executive actions in court.

James’s office has not provided any comments regarding the investigation.

James initiated an investigation into the Trump Organization shortly after taking office, ultimately securing a $454 million judgment against the former president and some executives of Trump’s company, including his sons. A New York judge determined that Trump and his associates had significantly exaggerated Trump’s wealth to obtain favorable loans and other financial benefits. James emphasized that financial fraud is not a victimless crime.

The news of a grand jury investigation emerges as tensions between Trump and James continue to escalate.

In April, the Trump Federal Housing Finance Agency requested Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate James for mortgage fraud, leading to a separate investigation by the Department of Justice. James has refuted the allegations of mortgage fraud.

Meanwhile, Trump referred to her as a “wacky crook” on Truth Social, insisting that she should resign from her position as New York State Attorney General immediately.
