The two developed a friendship, and in 1981, when Grobel was considering interviewing infamous serial killer Charles Manson, he sought Parton’s opinion. He was unsure about proceeding with the interview.
“I think he’d steal your soul,” Parton warned Grobel in the diary entry. “I can’t even look at a picture of him.”
Parton expressed that engaging with Manson would not be beneficial and that the attention would only feed into his notoriety. She emphasized the negative impact such an encounter could have on one’s spirit.
Grobel ultimately decided against the interview, crediting Parton with helping him make that choice.
