Former Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, criticized Zohran Mamdani, a mayoral candidate in New York City, for living in a rent-stabilized apartment despite his wealth.
Cuomo posted on X, stating that Mamdani’s occupation of a rent-controlled apartment was depriving a single mother and her children of housing, as they were forced to sleep in a homeless shelter. This came after Mamdani revealed that his monthly rent was $2,300.
Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani but is now running as an independent in the general election, urged his opponent to give up his apartment to someone more in need. He highlighted Mamdani’s privileged background, high income, and ownership of international properties. Cuomo also pointed out that Mamdani’s wife is employed, further boosting their household income.

“No matter how you look at it, Zohran Mamdani is a wealthy individual,” Cuomo stated. “You are indeed very wealthy. Yet you and your wife pay $2,300 a month, as you have boasted, for a nice apartment in Astoria. That should be housing for someone in need.”
The former governor also drew attention to New York City’s affordability crisis, emphasizing that millions of low-income residents in the city require reasonably-priced housing. The median rent in New York City has risen to $3,397, nearly $200 higher than in 2024, according to Realtor.com.

“Today, I am calling on you to move out immediately and give your affordable housing back to a homeless family who needs it,” Cuomo declared. “Leaders must demonstrate moral clarity. It’s time to vacate.”
Earlier in the week, Cuomo also criticized Mamdani for owning property in Uganda, despite the country’s anti-LGBT policies.

“Up until now, Zohran Mamdani and his campaign have avoided scrutiny: He talks like Bernie but lives like Bezos,” a spokesperson for Cuomo told Fox News Digital in an email. “Handing over the reins of New York City to a do-nothing, hypocritical assemblyman is a mistake. Andrew Cuomo is running to ensure real affordability, protect our streets, and build a new New York City by providing opportunities to those who truly need them.”
