The latest trend on TikTok is using watermelon for weight loss.
The watermelon diet is a method for weight loss and detox that involves consuming only watermelon for several consecutive days – ranging from three to seven days.
Several TikTok creators have shared their experiences with this diet, claiming to have lost several pounds by the end of the “fast.”
While watermelon is a hydrating and healthy snack option, some experts caution against relying solely on this low-calorie fruit for an extended period.
Dr. Mark Hyman, a physician based in Texas, expressed concerns about this trend in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“Turning watermelon into the centerpiece of a restrictive diet is not sustainable and can have negative effects on your health,” warned Dr. Hyman.
While watermelon can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet, consuming only this fruit for an extended period may lead to nutritional deficiencies, according to the doctor.
“There is no one-size-fits-all diet, especially when it’s driven by social media trends rather than scientific evidence,” Hyman emphasized.
“Eating only watermelon may result in temporary weight loss, but it’s not sustainable in the long run,” he added. “It’s important to focus on lifestyle changes for lasting health benefits.”

Dr. Hyman recommended focusing on a diet rich in whole vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats, and fiber, along with adequate sleep, stress management, and physical activity for overall well-being.
Los Angeles-based dietitian nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein pointed out that the water, l-citrulline, and potassium in watermelon can aid in detoxifying the body.
“Consuming a significant amount of watermelon can help stimulate natural detoxification processes in the body,” Muhlstein explained.
She also highlighted the benefits of l-citrulline in watermelon, which can promote blood flow, circulation, and lymphatic drainage.

While the detoxifying effects of watermelon are beneficial, Muhlstein advised against following a strict watermelon-only diet.
She warned that such a diet could lead to muscle loss and electrolyte imbalances due to the fruit’s low protein content.

Instead of following a strict watermelon diet, Muhlstein suggested including watermelon as part of a balanced and varied diet for optimal health.
“Eating a balanced diet that includes watermelon alongside other nutritious foods is key for overall health and well-being,” she concluded.
