TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis has launched a new tool to protect Florida homeowners from predatory contractors following Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The ‘Check My Contract’ portal allows policyholders to submit contracts for a free review from the Florida Department of Financial Services.
Patronis warns that after storms, predatory contractors target desperate homeowners, emphasizing the need for vigilance when signing contracts.
The portal aims to prevent inflated rates that could deplete insurance payouts, potentially leaving homeowners financially burdened and in need of additional repairs.
After Hurricane Ian, Patronis’s office launched criminal investigations and put fraudsters behind bars, underscoring the importance of stopping fraud before it worsens homeowners’ losses.
The department will review contracts for compliance with emergency protections and consumer rights in post-storm recovery to ensure homeowners are not taken advantage of.
