Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan believes that President Donald Trump’s social media attacks on him for switching from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party actually validate his decision to change political affiliations.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to criticize Duncan, calling him a “total loser” who was never able to accomplish anything and only complained. Trump stated that the Republican Party did not want Duncan anymore, leading him to become a Democrat.
In response to Trump’s comments, Duncan expressed that they reinforce his belief that the Republican Party no longer embodies the values of loving one’s neighbor, which is a key reason for his departure.
Duncan highlighted that he finds it easier to love his neighbor as a Democrat, as it aligns more with his values and beliefs. He emphasized that his decision to switch parties was influenced by various policy issues, including health care, Medicaid, gun safety, immigration, and poverty.
After serving in Georgia’s legislature and as lieutenant governor, Duncan decided not to seek re-election in 2022. He has been critical of Trump’s attempts to challenge the 2020 election results and has worked towards rebuilding a Republican Party that he believes has been damaged.
Duncan endorsed President Biden in the 2024 election and later supported Vice President Harris. Despite being expelled from the GOP, he is considering running for governor in 2026, as he believes that Democrats in Georgia need a moderate candidate to succeed.
As Georgia gears up for upcoming elections, Duncan sees the state playing a crucial role in shaping the political landscape. He hopes that Georgia can lead the way in promoting common-sense leadership and unity.
Overall, Duncan’s journey from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party reflects his commitment to values that prioritize compassion, understanding, and effective governance.
