Carr has filed a lawsuit challenging Jones’ ability to spend money from his leadership committee, which allows state officials to raise unlimited funds for their campaigns. Both Carr and Jones are vying to succeed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp after the upcoming election.
Carr argues that Jones’ leadership committee restricts his own campaign finance options, violating his First Amendment right to free speech and his 14th Amendment right to equal protection. The 2021 state law that established leadership committees does not grant Carr access to the same fundraising resources available to Jones.
Carr’s standard campaign committee is subject to donation limits, while Jones’ leadership committee allows for larger contributions, prompting Carr’s legal challenge.

A spokesperson for Carr’s campaign accused Jones of using his position to circumvent campaign contribution limits and funnel unlimited funds into his primary campaign.
In response, a spokesperson for Jones criticized Carr for challenging a law that his office previously defended, calling Carr’s actions hypocritical.
