Gwyneth Paltrow reportedly believed she was “smarter, better educated, more sophisticated” than Brad Pitt, as detailed in a new biography.
In an excerpt from the book “Gwyneth: The Biography,” author Amy Odell discussed the early days of Paltrow’s relationship with Pitt and highlighted her alleged reservations about him.
The couple first met in 1993 during an audition for “Legends of the Fall.” While Paltrow didn’t land that role, Pitt later recommended her for a part in the movie “Se7en” alongside him. Around the same time, Paltrow was also offered a role in “Feeling Minnesota,” which ultimately went to Keanu Reeves.
“She consulted a friend who asked, ‘Well, who do you want to date, Brad Pitt or Keanu Reeves?’ Gwyneth chose ‘Se7en’ and Pitt, while Cameron Diaz took the ‘Feeling Minnesota’ role,” Odell wrote.
Paltrow and Pitt dated for two years before getting engaged in 1996.
“Her dad [Bruce Paltrow] adored Brad. Her friends loved Brad. They all thought he was the nicest guy,” Odell revealed.
According to the author, Paltrow had reservations about her relationship with Pitt early on.
“Gwyneth expressed doubts to a crew member [while filming the 1996 movie ‘Emma’] that Pitt was the right match for her, and even confessed to having a crush on Hugh Grant,” Odell wrote.
She further added, “He was raised very religious in Missouri. It’s a completely different world from hers, growing up in Manhattan, attending Spence. She thought he wasn’t sophisticated enough for her. She believed she was more intelligent, better educated, and more sophisticated.”
The book also referenced a past interview where Paltrow discussed her relationship with Pitt.
“Brad and I come from very different backgrounds. So when we go out to restaurants and order caviar, I have to explain to Brad, ‘This is beluga and this is osetra,’” Paltrow shared, as reported by People.
Pitt and Paltrow eventually ended their relationship in 1997.
Representatives for Pitt and Paltrow did not respond to requests for comment.
