Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio is proposing “Holly’s Act” following a violent attack on a woman in Cincinnati, with the aim of putting an end to what he perceives as the justice system’s leniency towards repeat offenders.
The incident occurred in the early hours of July 26 at the intersection of Fourth and Elm streets in Cincinnati’s central business district.
A bystander video captured a large group turning on several individuals that morning, with an unidentified man heard using racial slurs while being assaulted. Another video shows a woman, referred to as “Holly,” being knocked unconscious after trying to intervene.
A single 911 call was made several minutes after the incident, despite over 100 people present during the altercation.
Senator Moreno held a press conference in Cincinnati after meeting with various officials to discuss the incident and potential solutions.
During the press conference, Moreno mentioned the possibility of implementing “Holly’s Act” to increase minimum sentences and bail requirements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He emphasized the importance of holding judges accountable for their decisions and not allowing repeat offenders to roam freely on the streets.
Holly, the victim of the attack, expressed her desire for justice reform and stricter penalties for offenders to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Senator Moreno also highlighted the need for more police presence and better technology to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Several individuals have been charged in connection to the attack, with one suspect arrested in Georgia awaiting extradition to Ohio.
A grand jury is set to convene to review the charges against the remaining suspects involved in the incident.
