Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro faced backlash for joining a lawsuit to oppose President Donald Trump’s restrictions on juvenile gender surgeries and criticizing supporters of a state Senate bill that would prohibit biological males from participating in girls’ sports.
The potential 2028 Democratic candidate emphasized that his objection to Trump’s actions does not necessarily mean he supports such procedures, but rather believes that medical decisions should be left to parents and local communities, not the federal government.
“I am suing the Trump administration along with 16 other states for threatening baseless investigations and prosecutions against healthcare providers in Pennsylvania and attempting to interfere with medical decisions made by parents and local communities,” Shapiro stated to Fox News Digital.
“The freedom to make healthcare decisions should be a matter between parents, their children, and their doctor. I will not stand by while the federal government tries to limit the rights and freedoms of Pennsylvania families,” the governor added.
However, this did not alleviate concerns within the state’s Senate GOP majority. A spokesperson for the caucus’ campaign committee criticized Shapiro’s actions as risking the health of children in order to appeal to the Democrats’ radical base.
Shapiro also criticized Trump and Senator Doug Mastriano, referring to them as “extremist politicians” for their attempts to regulate student participation in sports and restrict freedom in various aspects.
Mastriano, a co-sponsor of the “Save Women Sports Act,” which aims to prevent biological males from competing in girls’ sports, defended his stance against Shapiro’s accusations, highlighting the importance of preserving opportunities for women as outlined in Title IX.
Shapiro’s alignment with progressive views on certain issues has drawn criticism from the right, including his involvement in the lawsuit against Trump and his comments on Ward’s bill.
As the political landscape continues to shift, with progressive candidates gaining traction in various regions, Shapiro’s actions are seen as attempts to align with the left, leading to clashes with more conservative figures like Mastriano.
Despite his efforts to position himself as a moderate, Shapiro’s actions and statements have drawn scrutiny from critics who question his true intentions.

Additionally, Garcetti stated that businesses found violating the mask mandate could face fines or even have their operating licenses revoked. The mayor urged residents to do their part in slowing the spread of the virus by following these guidelines. Los Angeles has been a hotspot for the virus in recent weeks, and these new measures are aimed at curbing further transmission and keeping the community safe.
