FIRST ON FOX: The attorney general of Kansas has requested the Department of Justice (DOJ) to look into the funding sources behind an “environmental lawfare campaign” that has emerged in recent years.

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach claimed on Monday that the Chinese government is financing litigation in the United States aimed at weakening the U.S. energy sector and boosting China’s energy industry, according to a letter obtained by Fox News Digital.

The Energy Foundation China, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco with a significant presence in Beijing, seems to be providing funding for some of these lawsuits, stated Kobach, a Republican official.

“Not surprisingly, the EFC appears to support actions that align with China’s strategic interest in boosting alternative energy production systems in which China controls crucial supply chains for necessary minerals, batteries, solar panels, and other energy technologies,” Kobach wrote.

Kobach also mentioned that the nonprofit has “close ties” to the Chinese Communist Party and recommended that the DOJ should investigate potential improper foreign influence on the U.S. economy.

Kobach’s letter comes after the state attorney general testified last month at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the same issue. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, chaired the hearing titled “Enter the Dragon—China and the Left’s Lawfare Against American Energy Dominance.”

“Our energy sector is the engine of American prosperity, the lifeblood of our industrial power, our national security, and our geopolitical leverage,” Cruz stated during his opening remarks. “If American energy is under attack, so is American security and American independence.”
