U.S. Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon responded to a recent report that the Maine education commissioner advised schools to disregard President Donald Trump’s executive orders in emails.

McMahon referenced the Trump administration’s legal action against the state for defying Title IX in a post on X Tuesday.

“Deliberately defying federal law is the reason why [the Department of Education] found Maine in violation of Title IX – and why DOJ is continuing its lawsuit against the state. If you ignore federal law, there will be consequences,” McMahon wrote.

Emails obtained by Fox News Digital revealed that Maine Department of Education Commissioner Pender Makin drafted memos for schools suggesting they follow Maine state law instead of complying with Trump’s executive orders related to public education.

Makin corresponded with Maine Assistant Attorney General Sarah Forster regarding the memo, advising schools to adhere to state laws and local policies rather than the federal executive orders.

Maine state representative Laurel Libby expressed her views on the matter in an interview with “Fox & Friends,” highlighting the disagreement with the policies being pushed within the state.

Maine and Governor Janet Mills have been in conflict with Trump’s administration since February over the state’s refusal to comply with certain executive orders. The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Mills and the state for defying Title IX.

A survey conducted by the American Parents Coalition found that a majority of registered Maine voters support basing school sports participation on biological sex and restricting women’s sports to biological females.
