In his latest press conference following the tragic mass shooting in New York City, Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Mamdani also talked about his experience with customs upon returning to the U.S. from his trip to Africa.

During the press conference on Wednesday, Mamdani addressed questions about his recent visit to Uganda for his wedding. He mentioned that he flew economy class and was prepared for potential customs issues upon his return.

“Living in the United States under our current president, this is unfortunately a reality we have to face,” Mamdani stated.

After arriving back in New York City from Uganda, Mamdani made a visit to the family of NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was one of the victims in the mass shooting that took place recently.

According to Mamdani, he spent close to an hour with the family, highlighting the immigrant background of both Officer Islam and another victim, Aland Etienne.

“Both Officer Islam and Aland Etienne were immigrants who came to this city seeking a better life, and their sacrifices have paved the way for their families to have better lives,” Mamdani expressed.

The tragic incident involved a lone gunman, Shane Tamura, who opened fire in a Manhattan office building, resulting in the deaths of four individuals before taking his own life.

Among the victims were Officer Didarul Islam, Wesley LePatner, Aland Etienne, and Julia Hyman.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, with reports suggesting the gunman had issues related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) that he blamed on football.

Following the shooting, Mamdani’s previous criticisms of the NYPD and calls to defund the police have come under scrutiny. He has also faced questions about his pledge to disband a special NYPD unit responsible for handling riots and shootings.

The press conference on Wednesday provided reporters with the opportunity to question Mamdani about these controversial statements.

Addressing concerns about a past social media post mocking a police officer, Mamdani clarified that he is not in favor of defunding the police.

During the press conference, Mamdani also mentioned the increased threats he has received since becoming a mayoral candidate, emphasizing the precautions he has had to take for his safety.
