A 28-year-old man received a sentence of one year of home detention and three years of probation for attacking two pro-life activists outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Baltimore.
Baltimore Circuit Judge Yvette M. Bryant rejected prosecutors’ request for a 10-year sentence for Patrick Brice, 28, who was found guilty of two counts of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment in connection to the May 2023 incident.
“What about my rights and my well-being?” one of the victims, Mark Crosby, shouted at Bryant as she left the bench.
Brice stated that he intended to engage in a debate about sin with Richard Schaefer outside the Planned Parenthood facility, but things escalated after Schaefer made a comment that Brice perceived as racial. Surveillance footage captured Brice shoving Schaefer into a flowerpot and then assaulting Crosby when he tried to help.
“I just lost control that day,” Brice admitted in court before apologizing to the victims.
As part of his sentence, Brice is required to complete anger management classes, undergo drug and alcohol screening, and continue therapy. Crosby suffered permanent eye damage as a result of the assault.
“This was not a minor disagreement between individuals with differing views on abortion. It was a deliberate, targeted assault on two elderly individuals whose only ‘offense’ was praying for expectant mothers and offering alternatives to abortion,” said Tom Brejcha, President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Society.
In May 2023, images posted on social media showed Crosby with injuries following the attack. Jay Walton, president of the Baltimore County Right to Life chapter, confirmed the incident.
In a police report, Crosby described standing outside the Planned Parenthood clinic in support of pro-life beliefs when he was attacked. Witnesses reported that the altercation stemmed from a debate over pro-life and pro-choice viewpoints.
Crosby’s attorney denounced the incident as a blatant disregard for the law and human decency.
“We were defenseless,” Crosby stated. “The brutality towards elderly individuals is appalling.”

In a surprising turn of events, a new study has found that coffee may have unexpected health benefits. Researchers discovered that moderate coffee consumption could potentially lower the risk of certain diseases, such as heart disease and stroke.
The study, which was published in a reputable medical journal, followed thousands of participants over several years. The results showed that those who drank coffee in moderation had a lower incidence of heart-related issues compared to non-coffee drinkers.
While the exact mechanisms behind this correlation are still unclear, researchers believe that the antioxidants and other compounds found in coffee may play a role in improving heart health. However, it is important to note that excessive coffee consumption can have negative effects on health, so moderation is key.
This study adds to a growing body of research that suggests coffee may have more benefits than previously thought. As always, individuals should consult with their healthcare provider before making any changes to their diet or lifestyle based on these findings.
