As efforts continue to clean up after the devastating flooding that swept through central Texas over the July 4 weekend, there is a focus on helping survivors and the loved ones of victims cope mentally. Dr. Sabrina Browne, a pediatric psychiatrist based in Dallas, shared insights with Fox News Digital about the challenges survivors and those connected to victims may be facing.

“Tragedies like this hit close to home in a very real way. It’s different when you see events unfold on TV versus when it happens in your own community, impacting your life on every level,” Browne explained. “Even after the cameras leave and aid organizations wrap up, families will still be dealing with the aftermath.”

Following a tragedy like the recent flooding, individuals may experience various reactions. According to Browne, one common response is a loss of “feeling of safety” and a “sense of stability.”

“You take for granted waking up in the morning, going about your day, and coming back to your home. When that stability is shaken, it’s a significant loss,” Browne noted.

In addition to the loss of stability, individuals may also experience anxiety, worry, or fear of another disaster. Browne highlighted the possibility of flood survivors developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and survivor’s guilt.

Browne has previously supported Texas families through tragedy, including the aftermath of the 2022 Uvalde school shooting. She emphasized the differences in treating adults versus children, noting that “kids aren’t just little adults.”

“Children of different ages have unique experiences and understanding levels,” Browne explained. “A 12-year-old will process events differently than a 7-year-old due to cognitive development.”

For many children affected by the recent flooding, this may be their first encounter with disaster and death.

“Children may have previously encountered death in a more distant way, such as losing a grandparent. But when they see their peers affected by a tragedy, it becomes more personal, leading to questions and fears about their own safety,” Browne added.

Various organizations, including Spring Health, are offering support to help flood victims in their recovery process. Spring Health recently pledged $500,000 in free mental health services for flood victims in Texas, North Carolina, and New Mexico.

“Recovery from a disaster involves addressing emotional well-being in addition to physical rebuilding. It’s important for those affected to know they have support,” said April Koh, CEO of Spring Health. “Our program aims to provide high-quality, confidential mental health support at no cost to those impacted.”

As part of their initiative, Spring Health is offering virtual sessions with licensed clinicians for individuals who may not have access to in-person care.

When determining if a child needs professional help, Browne advised parents to observe changes in their behavior. Signs such as regression and seeking comfort in familiar spaces like their room could indicate the need for additional support.

“If you notice significant changes like sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, or withdrawal from activities, it’s essential to seek professional help for your child,” Browne emphasized.
