The mother of a congressional intern who tragically lost his life in a drive-by shooting recently criticized the Washington, D.C., Council, stating that the city’s residents “are not being adequately protected.”

Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a 21-year-old student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was fatally shot on June 30 and passed away on July 1. He was interning for Rep. Ron Estes, R-Kan., during his time in Washington, D.C.

The shooting, which was not aimed at Tarpinian-Jachym, also resulted in injuries to a 16-year-old male and an adult female. As of now, no suspects have been apprehended. The incident occurred in the 1200 block of 7th Street, Northwest.

Multiple individuals exited a vehicle and opened fire, resulting in Tarpinian-Jachym’s tragic death.

Eric’s mother, Tamara Jachym, expressed her frustration with the D.C. Council for not taking violent crime seriously.

She emphasized the need for increased collaboration between the council and federal authorities to address the rising crime rates and implement measures to enhance public safety.

Jachym described her son as a compassionate individual who enjoyed spending time with elderly members of the community.

Former homicide detective Ted Williams highlighted the challenges law enforcement faces in solving drive-by shooting cases, emphasizing the importance of witness cooperation.

Rep. Ron Estes praised Tarpinian-Jachym for his kindness and dedication to serving the community.

The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department are offering a $40,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case.
