Cincinnati freshman offensive lineman Jeremiah Kelly passed away unexpectedly at the age of 18 in April.

According to a coroner’s report cited by ESPN, Kelly’s cause of death was “cardiac hypertrophy,” a condition characterized by thickening of the heart muscles.

Kelly’s sudden death came as a shock to his mother, Chiniqua, who described him as the “healthiest child” with no prior health issues.

Despite finding some closure with the coroner’s report, Chiniqua is now advocating for her other sons to see a sports cardiologist.

Reflecting on the tragedy, she emphasized the importance of being aware of any potential health issues that could be prevented.

Chiniqua revealed that Kelly was at home relaxing the day before his passing and had been wearing a heart monitor during physical activity.

A spokesperson for the school confirmed to ESPN that Kelly had undergone a physical examination before joining the team as required by the NCAA, as he had enrolled early at the school and participated in spring practices.

“The Cincinnati football program and athletics department continue to mourn Jeremiah’s passing,” said a statement from the team. “He is deeply missed by all of us.”

Kelly was a standout player for the Avon Eagles football team, contributing to their undefeated season in 2024 and securing the school’s first state championship. He received several accolades for his performance on the field, including being named SWC lineman of the year.

As a junior, Kelly also played alongside current Cincinnati running back Jakorion Caffey, showcasing his talent and leadership on the team.
