NFL coaches respond to shooting at league headquarters

The tragic mass shooting that occurred in New York City on Monday has deeply affected sports fans.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams revealed that the shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, seemed to have targeted the National Football League. The shooting took place at the same building where the league’s headquarters are located in Manhattan.

The New York Giants and Jets, whose home games are played just a few miles away from the league offices, expressed their condolences through their respective head coaches.

“The tragic events at 345 Park Ave were devastating. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragedy, here at the Giants,” stated Giants head coach Brian Daboll during training camp on Tuesday.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn added, “It’s a somber morning. The incident that occurred at the league office yesterday is heartbreaking. As an organization, our thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. It’s always difficult to hear about such events and remain focused on our responsibilities. But we must stay focused because we have a job to do. However, our hearts go out to the families enduring this hardship, it’s truly challenging.”

According to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department, Tamura mentioned the NFL in a handwritten “suicide note,” claiming to have CTE.

The NFL Players’ Association released a statement early Tuesday morning in response to the shooting, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including an NYPD officer.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred yesterday in New York City. 345 Park Avenue is a part of our football family, and we at the NFLPA extend our sincere condolences and support to the people who work in this building and to the families of those who lost their lives,” the NFLPA stated. “We also want to express our deep gratitude to the law enforcement and emergency personnel who responded to those impacted.”

Mayor Adams mentioned that the shooter was attempting to reach the NFL’s headquarters but ended up on the wrong elevator bank.

According to a memo from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to NFL employees obtained by Fox News Digital, one NFL staff member was “seriously injured” in the shooting.

The shooter was discovered dead on the 33rd floor, where he had also fatally shot another woman before taking his own life. NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch mentioned that Tamura had a history of mental health issues.
