A staff member of the National Football League (NFL) was reportedly “seriously injured” during a mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan, where the league’s headquarters is located.

The tragic incident took place at the office building on 52nd Street and Park Avenue, resulting in five fatalities, including a police officer, before the gunman took his own life.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a message to all league employees regarding the distressing event.

“As has been widely reported, a gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue. One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack,” the message read. “He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family.

“We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared.”

Goodell emphasized the importance of following emergency notifications as the situation continued to evolve.

An off-duty NYPD officer killed in the shooting was identified as Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh. He left behind two sons and a pregnant wife. He was providing security for Rudin Management Company inside the building when the tragic event took place.

“We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others,” Goodell expressed.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that the lone shooter was 27-year-old Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident with a history of mental health issues.

Tamura was seen traveling across the country, with his vehicle last spotted in Columbia, New Jersey shortly before the shooting at the high-rise building.

Security footage indicated Tamura entering the lobby at 345 Park Avenue and immediately opening fire, injuring multiple individuals. He then shot a security guard with an M4 assault rifle before proceeding to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot another person before taking his own life.

Tamura had a concealed carry permit in Nevada.

The NYPD conducted a thorough search of each floor of the building to ensure everyone’s safety and to rule out any additional shooters.

In his message to employees, Goodell mentioned the available resources for coping with the tragic incident.

“As you know, there are significant resources available to all employees, including grief counselors,” Goodell reassured. “Human Resources will provide more details on these resources shortly.

“Those in New York are encouraged to work remotely the following day. If preferred, taking the day off is understandable. Security measures at 345 Park Avenue will be heightened in the coming days and weeks.

Each and every employee is valued within the NFL family, and together, we will overcome this challenge.”
