New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who previously served as lieutenant governor under Andrew Cuomo, stated on Sunday that she has found “areas of alignment” with democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, the front-runner for New York City mayor.
During an interview on “Fox News Sunday” with host Shannon Bream, Hochul was asked if she supported Mamdani, who is competing against Cuomo and others. This question arose after Mamdani praised Hochul for hosting Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to oppose a GOP redistricting plan.
“We still have many differences. I don’t know how you overlook that,” Hochul said. “He may agree with me, as do many others, that New Yorkers stand up for our rights. It’s in our nature to fight. I’m a mother from Buffalo. Maybe they’re not accustomed to taking on a mother from Buffalo.”
“There are numerous points of disagreement, but there are also areas of agreement, particularly on affordability,” added the governor regarding Mamdani. “His election struck a chord. People felt that they weren’t progressing. The promises made by Trump’s policies to elevate people, reduce costs, protect Medicaid, and create jobs through tariffs did not materialize. There is a sense of urgency for change.”
As governor, Hochul mentioned that she has collaborated with two different mayors of New York City in the past and is committed to working with whoever the voters choose, ensuring a successful partnership.

“I will find a way to make it work because I won’t engage in conflict with the 8 million residents of New York whom I represent. My role is to bring calmness. Let’s wait for the election results, but people need to acknowledge that the mayoral candidate has also struck a chord, and we must respond to that. I agree with him that we need to find ways to make life more affordable for New Yorkers.”
Hochul assumed the position of governor after Cuomo resigned amid various controversies and was later elected to a full term.
Following his defeat in the June Democratic mayoral primary to Mamdani, Cuomo entered the race as an independent candidate, joining incumbent New York City Mayor Eric Adams as another independent candidate in the general election.

Adams and Cuomo have engaged in a war of words about which one of them should withdraw from the race before November to improve the chances of defeating Mamdani.
