Zohran Mamdani, a socialist mayoral candidate in New York City, is reportedly considering former Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman as a potential choice to lead the city’s schools. Bowman’s controversial track record on various issues has raised concerns.

If Mamdani were to win the mayoral election in November, Bowman could potentially become the Chancellor of Schools in New York City. In this role, he would be responsible for overseeing more than 1,000 schools with nearly a million students, as reported by the New York Post last month.

Bowman, a progressive Democrat and former member of “The Squad” in Congress, made headlines in 2015 when he referred to standardized testing in public schools as a “form of modern-day slavery” during his time as a Bronx public school principal.

According to a recent New York Post report, Bowman operated a radical public school without a license for approximately two years.

In 2023, Bowman gained national attention for pulling a fire alarm in Congress during a House floor vote, leading to his censure. He has also faced criticism for controversial anti-Israel remarks.

Bowman has defended the pro-Palestine chant “From the river to the sea,” which some in the Jewish community view as a call to eradicate Israel. He has been vocal in his criticism of Israel, especially during conflicts with Hamas in Gaza.

He has apologized for denying that Hamas committed atrocities during an attack in Israel. Bowman’s defense of a mural of Louis Farrakhan and his honoring of a convicted murderer at a New York City middle school have also sparked outrage.

Zohran Mamdani, the New York City Mayoral candidate, has faced criticism for his anti-Israel positions dating back to his college days. He has supported BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) against Israel, which aims to delegitimize the State of Israel through economic isolation.

Mamdani has also come under fire for refusing to condemn the phrase “Globalize the intifada” and for his statements about Israel not being a legitimate country.

When asked about the possibility of Bowman leading the city’s schools, Bowman expressed his focus on supporting Mamdani’s election campaign.
