An off-duty NYPD officer who was fatally shot in Manhattan on Monday has been identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam. Islam, a father of two with a pregnant wife, was one of four people killed in a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building. The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, had a history of mental health issues and ultimately turned the gun on himself after the attack.

The tragic incident took place at an office building that housed Blackstone, an investment firm, and the NFL headquarters. Islam was working security at the building at the time of the shooting.
President Donald Trump expressed his sympathies for the victims and their families, calling the shooting “senseless” and trusting law enforcement to investigate the motive behind the attack. The NYPD also paid tribute to Islam for his dedication to protecting the people of New York City.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and New York City Mayor Eric Adams also mourned the loss of Officer Islam, emphasizing his heroism and dedication to the city. Flags were ordered to be flown at half-staff in honor of Islam.
Gov. Kathy Hochul praised Islam for his service and immigrant background, calling for action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Various officials and public figures, including controversial mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, offered their condolences and support to the victims and their families.
Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner was among those killed in the shooting, with the names of the other victims yet to be released. The NFL also confirmed that one employee was seriously injured during the incident.
